Tatooine Manhunt – for Outgunned!

I’ve been doing a fair bit of adapting old “classic” adventures for modern systems recently – this was one that I did from the old WEG d6 Star Wars system into Outgunned! Here’s the notes for it – presented, as usual, in pretty raw form – if you’re a Patron, you can get the pregens I used for it too! (They’re the same as the Strike Force Shantipole ones, if you’ve already downloaded them).

I’ve included the CATS that I did with the session – just to encourage more people to do this explicitly in one-shots; it really helps to put everyone on the same page with the game. You’ll need, as with Strike Force Shantipole, both a copy of Outgunned! and the original adventure to use this – you should be able to get away without Action Flicks for this one, as there’s no starship combat in it.

While you’re reading this, I should tell you about my Patreon. Patrons get access to content 7 days before they hit this site, the chance to request articles or content, and the chance to play in one-shot games, for a very reasonable backer level of £2 per month. If you like what you read, want to support the blog, and have the funds for it, please consider supporting here. Telling people about the blog, and sharing links/retweeting is much appreciated also – thanks!

Intro – CATS

Concept –

Outgunned Star Raiders is an Action Flick setting for the game Outgunned, which is a cinematic action RPG. Outgunned has 2 (and counting) Action Flicks supplements which give short genre packs, and two of them are Star Wars with numbers filed off – we’re using Star Raiders – there’s another, Jedi Knights, one. Tatooine Manhunt is an old Star Wars D6 adventure – published in 1988 – and one of the ‘classic’ star wars adventures, alongside Strike Force Shantipole. It’s a mess of 1980s module design, so I’ve stripped it down and adapted, so fear not!

Aim –

You are rebels, and need to race against time (and hordes of bounty hunters) to find an old war hero. This is a pretty on-rails adventure, and is all on Tatooine – but don’t worry if you’ve got the pilot, there’s plenty of speeder action too.

To tell a tight one-shot that feels Star Wars and also maybe has a bit of nostalgia for the old game.

Tone –

Light hearted and heroic. You’re in the rebellion – and you’re heroes. We’ll work out why you joined at the start, and then jump right in. Outgunned is cinematic action, you’re pretty resilient, and we’ve got lots of spare pregens

Subject Matter –

It’s Star Wars. Saturday morning 1990s RPG module Star Wars, at that. Cert PG.

L&V – LINES – – violence to young children

– guns in schools, sexual violence

Prologue

Read the script together, then reveal the bounty hunters as the Mandalorean (Jodo Kast), and a human with a deeply scarred face (Quist) escapes. They need to somehow escape the Imperial Star Destroyer – this will be a CRITICAL dangerous roll for each of them, and they can montage how they do it. They find the darts on Dana.

Credits roll – TWO DAYS LATER – TATOOINE, OUTER RIM

The location of Adar Tallon has been identified – Tatooine – and the Imperial Star Destroyer will arrive in 5 days. With word put out from the Imperial fleet, every bounty hunter within days travel of Tatooine has descended on it – to capture this rebel hero. Except you – you’re going to recruit him.

Scene 1 – Mos Eisley Cantina, Tatooine

At the Cantina, determine what you are doing – there’s a Lumguzzling Contest, a Gambler’s den, and numerous ne’er do wells you can attempt to find stuff out from about Tallon’s potential location.

GAMBLING – a CRITICAL success gets a clue

LUMGUZZLING – a DANGEROUS CRITICAL roll gets a clue

TALKING TO PUGGLES – a CRITICAL success to

Clues

  • Oldsters, the original settlers of Tatooine, are your best bet to find them – there’s only two of them left though, Heff, Slag, and Arno
  • Slag Flats might know- she’s an Ithorian, and a gang leader here
  • Puggles is recruiting bounty hunters to go out and find them – there’s a Mandalorian here, and he’s putting  together a posse
  • There aren’t that many settlements outside of town – an old oasis, Sedi Fisk’s manor , Lank’s Farm, and the Tusken Fort and the main ones that spring to mind

As they are finishing their investigations, a drunken alien, Labria, sidles up to them

I hear you’ve been asking about Slag Flats – I can take you to her. Meet at midnight by the Space Hotel

The Rest of Mos Eisley

They encounter the Street Corner Preacher being hassled by a bunch of grim-looking bounty hunters – do they step in?

There’s an argument going on at Spaceport Speeders – where they want to increase the chargers to some off-world bounty hunters – can they help?

The local government office can supply more clues as to possible locations

Just as they are getting bored, they hear a shout- Old Heff is dead! There’s a poisoned dart in his neck.

Scene 2 – Slag Flats

Tower Ridge – a disused transmission antenna – has a water silo in it. Labria says this is as far as he goes, and turns around.

In the silo, Slag is very dead, with the same dart in her neck – and the magnetic doors on the silo clang shut, and it begins to fill with water!

At this point, a roomy landspeeder drives off.

Escaping the Silo requires a CRITICAL check – they can then chase off the landspeer, assuming they brought theirs.

Silo Chase

This Chase has a Need of 10 and a starting Speed of 1 from the roomy landspeeder

1-Adrenaline – Fiery Rain – a hail of blaster fire, -1 to next Reactions

Optional Scene – Bounty Hunter Ambush

As they return, they are ambushed – maybe in the Cantina, maybe in the street – by Bounty Hunters

Attack: 2 Basic, Defense: Basic

Feat: Mob – when you lose Grit, lose 1 additional Grit

At the end of this action, Old Arno shows himself

You’ve been making quite the scene here, and you’re not like the others – maybe I can help you.

Arno will guide them into the Wastes

Scene 3 – The Wastes

As Old  Arno guides them across the wastes, there are a number of locations they can go to. This is a collapsible scene – as many or as little of these can be run for them depending on time. If in doubt, an engagement roll from one player (of e.g. Focus+Detect) at Critical to see if they start in control or in a bad spot

  • Sedi Fisk’s Manor is full of Womp Rats

Quiet canyon, manor in ruins, tiny community smashed to pieces, wind blowing – Sedi Fisk no longer lives here, it is clear. Shadows grow darker – and Womp Rats attack!

The Womp Rats are TEMPLATE 1 GOONS from the Outgunned! Book, with:

Mob – lose 1 additional Grit

  • The Oasis houses the Dim-U who worship the Bantha and will give you a charm – a whistle you can blow

A small town fighting to survive in the desert wastes, with Dryon, the high priest, greeting them. They had also had bounty hunters come – a Mandalorian, Kast, who asked questions about Tallon. But all we could offer was hospitality. The Bantha are peaceful creatures. In the night, a smoke grenade comes in, and a gang of thugs attack!

The Bounty Hunters are TEMPLATE 3 GOONS from the Outgunned! Book, with:

Heavy-Handed – if you fail to score at least a BASIC success in your Action turn, become Tired, if already Tired lose 1 Grit

  • [[Lank’s Farm holds a sniper – a young girl

Reen, the girl, says her father was killed by a man in shiny armour – Arno suggests he take her back. – I removed this scene, as one of the lines introduced by the players was violence against children – this seemed to cross it. Why L&V are important, folks!]]

  • There’s a BANTHA STAMPEDE to deal with – Critical Dangerous, and +1 dice with the charm. As they defeat them, Sand People attack

The Bantha Stampede is a TEMPLATE 1 GOONS with:

Mob – lose 1 additional Grit

Scene 4 – Tusken Fort

Sprawling, flat structure, clearly fortified. They can sneak in, or go right ahead.

Tallon greets them as Imperials

You Imperials are becoming more persistent since I last dealt with Palpatine’s agents. Very well, what do you have to offer?

They must try and persuade him of their good intentions.

He explains he’s had to hire these mercenaries to keep himself safe – he just hopes he can trust them. At this, one of them steps forward – and reveals his scarred face – and a hand with a blaster on it – a beeping sounds and he stops it;

I’m sorry, Adar – there’s no other way.

At this, Kast and his men rush in, and the finale ensues

Here they’ll have to face the Mandalorian, Jodo Kast, and his men

Kast is a BOSS TEMPLATE 1 with:

Mandalorian armour – cannot ever deal more than 1 Grit to Kast

Medkit – when loses all grit, immediately gain 1 back and continue

His men are GOONS 2 – judge whether these are necessary based on the PCs. I only had 3 players in my game, so we just used the Boss template – don’t underestimate that Mandalorian armour!
